This is a very nourishing and satisfying
cereal, full of protein, iron, B-vitamins and lots of
calcium. It is especially good in colder months. It
is strengthening and calming.
- 2 parts short
grain brown rice
- 2 parts sweet
rice
- 1 part whole
oats
- ½ part
sesame seeds
- 1 to 2 inch
piece of kombu seaweed
- Pinch of salt
Each grain and the sesame seeds should
be washed separately then spread out upon a cookie sheet
to be dried in the oven. The lower the oven temperature,
the longer drying will take. A 250 - 300 degree oven
is best. (Each grain dries at a different rate so dont
try to wash & dry rice and oats together.)
Once dried, combine ingredients and
store in a covered container. To make fresh cereal,
pour 1/4 cup of combined ingredients into a coffee grinder
that is just used for grains, or food processor, blender
or flour mill. Grind to a fine powder. Put in heavy
saucepan with 2 cups of water, small piece of kombu
and a pinch of salt. Bring to boil, then reduce to simmer,
stirring occasionally to prevent sticking to bottom
of pot. Cook covered or uncovered. Can add finely ground
blanched almonds, and/or cinnamon stick, vanilla, maple
syrup, etc. for flavor. It should cook at least 20 minutes
to get thick. In cold months try to cook it slower and
longer to absorb more fire. The above recipe would yield
22 pots of cereal if you use 2 cups of brown rice, 2
cups sweet rice, 1 cup oats, ½ cup sesame seeds.
